Now UK scientists have found the secret of making men temporarily infertile by
switching off sperms chance to swim. <br />They have made tiny designer compounds
which smuggle themselves into sperm, saving their tails from wiggling. If a
sperm cant swim, it has absolutely no way of naturally fertilising a womans egg.
<br />The key advance raises the prospect of a fast-acting pill or a nasal spray
that the man could take hours or perhaps just minutes before sex. Researchers
believe its effects has on off within days, meaning he would again be rich. By
contrast, women are typically advised to stop your Pill weeks actually months
before trying to conceive. <br />Last night, family planning experts said a
reversible male contraceptive could benefit millions of couples where the woman
cannot take the Pill for medical reasons. <br />And it would save men from being
trapped into having children they didn't want, they . With global sales of
contraceptives topping 13?billion a year, the market with a reversible male
contraceptive could be huge, but some cast doubt on the idea of a male pill,
doubting women will trust men consider it. <br />Lead researcher Professor John
Howl, of Wolverhampton University, a week ago described how effective their
sperm-stopping agent had been in lab tests. <br />He said: The effects are
startling and almost instant. As soon as you take healthy sperm and add our
compound, within a few minutes the sperm basically cannot move. <br />Male
infertility is usually the result of poorly moving sperm, called low motility.
Using this, the Wolverhampton team, together with Portuguese researchers,
resulted in a compound called a cell-penetrating peptide, which gets inside
sperm and brings in order to a standstill. Prof Howl said: This is usually a
totally unique approach nobody else has ever carried this out before.
<br />Peptides are short chains of aminos that can influence how human cells work.
They occur naturally but biochemists can make synthetic versions. Prof Howl and
colleague Dr Sarah Jones first demonstrated that certain cell-penetrating
peptides could smuggle themselves inside sperm cells, for being a Trojan horse.
<br />Then they teamed up with IVF experts at Aveiro University in Portugal, who
had identified the key protein responsible for putting the wiggle into sperm
tails. <br />The two universities developed a bespoke peptide which turns that
protein off. They tested decided in the petri dish on bovine and human sperm,
with similarly impressive results, all of which will soon publish their last.
<br />Prof Howl said they hoped to start live animal tests in two to three years,
thanks in part to a 175,000 Portuguese grant. It typically takes three to 5
years generate a new drug to promote after animal trials, the actual final
product could be available as early as 2021. <br />Prof Howl said ended up being
too early to say if the outcome would turn into pill, a nasal spray or a
sub-skin implant, but these people all methods. <br />John Guillebaud, emeritus
professor of family planning and reproductive health at University College,
London, said a reversible male contraceptive prospective of enormous benefit
intercourse is a couples, pertaining to example those for the woman cannot take
the Pill for medical reasons with regard to due to migraine with aura or perhaps
increased risk of blood clots. <br />He added: It would also help men who wants to
have power over their own fertility for example, for making sure they are not
trapped into having a young child by a person who says she is on the Pill, but
isnt. <br />An Anglia Ruskin University study found half of 134 women questioned
were concerned their partner would forget for taking a contraceptive, but Prof
Guillebaud, who's behind another male pill venture, said this the widely held
myth. He cited a bigger survey of 1,894 women, conducted in Scotland, China and
South Africa, which found only 2 per cent would not trust their partner.
<br />Professor Geeta Nargund, medical director of CREATE fertility clinics, said:
If this proves as well as effective, I know women would welcome the concept. Its
about time men took responsibility for contraception.<br />Just Sharehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11147696344364153277noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1760822098622872564.post-1121429841841774022016-10-24T03:42:00.002-07:002016-10-24T03:42:42.331-07:00Rotary continues to raise funds to fight polio <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The Matamata community has been a generous supporter of Rotary International's polio eradication programme for three decades.<br />
Its
annual appeal Purple Pinkie Day was held last Friday, which raised ….
This is tripled by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and goes
directly to polio eradication.<br />
In developing countries polio drops are delivered to children under five-years-old in many settings.<br />
Rotary
Matamata president Michelle Tanner visited Pakistan in 2014 where she
vaccinated children in schools, hospitals, slums and even at the zoo.<br />
She
says that with no record keeping, the child's little finger (pinkie) is
instead marked with purple ink which lasts for one month and ensures
they do not receive more drops in that time.<br />
Hence Purple Pinkie Day was born.<br />
Tanner
says this final push is one of the most expensive parts of the campaign
and complacency is a risk. Not in Matamata though.<br />
Rotary Matamata has been busy in recent years working to raise funds for this cause.<br />
In
2012 Rotary held a global swimarathon, where Matamata participants
turned out at 1am for a world record breaking swim event. Locally,
$22,000 was raised, more than any other Rotary club in the world, which
amounted to almost 20 per cent of the total money raised from the global
event.<br />
In 2014 the Rural Urban Dinner, attended by many from the community, raised $10,000.<br />

"sore loser" on Sunday because of his refusal at their debate last week to click
with accepting the results with the Nov. 8 election. <br />Clinton, a former
secretary of state, said Trump's comments were more consistent with what
dictators in non-democratic countries might say concerning their opponents.
<br />"To say you wont respect the reaction of the election, quite simple direct
threat towards the democracy," Clinton told a rally in the University of N . c .
at Charlotte. "The peaceful transfer of power is among the many things that
makes America America." <br />"And look, men and women are sore losers, and we
found to keep going," she added. <br />Earlier on Sunday, Kellyanne Conway, an
increased Trump adviser, acknowledged that the Republican presidential candidate
was lagging behind Clinton ahead of political election results. <br />Conway said
Clinton had "tremendous advantages," including a large campaign war chest that
had allowed her to spend millions on television ads. <br />"We are behind," Conway
said on NBC's "Meet the Press." But she added the Trump campaign was seeking to
sway undecided voters not ready to oblige Clinton. <br />As the polling gap has
widened, Trump has said repeatedly the election is being "rigged" against him.
He's not offered evidence and numerous research indicates that the You.S.
election system, which is decentralized and run by the states, is seem. <br />At
last week's debate with Clinton in Las Vegas, Trump was asked if he would honor
the results of the U.S. selection.<br />
<span id="article-text"></span><br />
"What I'm saying is that I will tell you at the time. I'll keep you in suspense. OK?" Trump said.<br />

Campaigning in Naples, Florida, on Sunday, Trump also encouraged voters to go
into the polls to vote both for him and Republicans running for Congress and
other offices. <br />"You have 16 days to choose this happen, but you need to get
out and vote, and occur . helping me re-elect Republicans all on the place."
<br />"I hope they assist me too. Be nice if assist us too, correct?" said Trump,
who has sparred lots of prominent members of his party, including U.S. House of
Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, the country's top elected Republican. <br />The
latest Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Friday had Clinton leading Trump by 4
percentage points, and the most recent State from the Nation project showed
Clinton with a 95 percent chance of winning the 270 Electoral College votes
needed to secure the presidency.<br />
An ABC News poll released on Sunday morning had Clinton leading with one half of
likely support, in comparison with Trump's 38 percent. The poll found that cash
advances of Republicans who said they were likely to vote fell 7 percentage
points from mid-October. <br />As Trump battled to win over undecided voters,
advisers and members of his inner circle sought to downplay his remarks within
the integrity of the election, in an indication although come under significant
pressure to accept the election results if he would lose. <br />Republican Party
Chairman Reince Priebus told me that by asking Trump to agree to concede, the
media were making an extraordinary request. He said Trump would only fight if
political election results were close and was not eager to dispute a fair
election. <br />"Thats not quite what hes exclaiming. What hes saying is he wants
to order all options and in case there is ground for a recount, Ill reserve all
options," Priebus said on CBS's "Face The Nation." <br />Trump's son Eric said on
Sunday that Trump would "100 percent" accept the results of your election if
continues reading is "fair." <br />I think what my father is saying is, 'I
apparent fair election, Eric Trump said on ABC's "This Times." If its a fair
outcome, he will absolutely accept it. Theres no question concerning this."
<br />On Sunday, Trump collected his first endorsement of the general election
from substantial newspaper once the Las Vegas Review-Journal backed his
candidacy. The newspaper is of Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson, who may be
reluctant to donate to Trump. In 2012, Adelson spent about $150 million working

Car giants Nissan will decide next month on whether to produce the next Qashqai
SUV model at its Sunderland plant following the UKs decision to leave the
European Union, its Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said. <br />
Its chief executive,
Carlos Ghosn, has announced it will decide next month whether or to produce its
next Qashqai SUV model at its Sunderland plant . <br />
If the UK had voted to keep
in the Europe Union on June 23, most believe that decision would to be able to a
formality. <br />
Now after Brexit , it is anything but which in turn. <br />
The
Wearside plant is one among the regions biggest employers with around 7,000
staff, while many thousands more work towards companies that provide components
and parts for it. <br />
Sharon Hodgson , MP for Washington and Sunderland West, in
whose constituency the Nissan factory is based, said: The decision on whether or
never to produce the new Qashqai SUV at the Sunderland Nissan factory will be an
indicator of Nissans confidence in our countrys economy as we begin the
associated with exiting the European Union, especially when questions remain
unanswered about our future access to singular most important market. <br />
The
Government have said they can do everything they can to support Nissan,
especially post-Brexit, however this decision is made it will thought to be
clear indicator of Nissans confidence to invest in our regions economy and aid
the 48,000 jobs based here in the North-East and about the country that count on
the success from the factory.<br />

Mr Ghosn’s comments follow his meeting last week with Prime Minister
Theresa May in which he warned that leaving the EU could halt investment
on Wearside.<br />
The factory, which builds the popular Qashqai SUV
and many other models, is Britain’s largest car plant, producing 475,000
vehicles last year, of which about 60% were Qashqais.<br />
Mr Ghosn
said: “We’re not asking for any advantage [from the British Government]
but we don’t want to lose any competitiveness no matter what the
discussions.”<br />
He said he had received reassurance that the
British government would be “extremely cautious” in “preserving the
competitiveness” of the Sunderland plant.<br />
“As long as I have this guarantee ... I can look at the future of Sunderland with more ease,” he said.Just Sharehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11147696344364153277noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1760822098622872564.post-83339885810900897112016-10-21T22:57:00.002-07:002016-10-23T00:32:43.986-07:00May’s first EU summit ends with warning of rough road aheadEuropean leaders adopt tough stance on Brexit talks while leaving door ajar<br />

<br />
Europes leaders warned Theresa May at her first Brussels summit to expect rough
going on the path to Brexit, even as they kept the door ajar for Britain to
change its mind on exiting the EU. <br />
After her debut at the EUs top table,
which included a late-night briefing on Brexit delivered to living room of tired
fellow leaders, the UK prime minister admitted there would be hard moments in
the months ahead that would require give and take. <br />
For some EU leaders, Mrs
Mays message that Britain would not be revisiting its referendum decision
remains a point of regret. While saying he respected the result, Donald Tusk,
the European Council president, said he possess preferred a different verdict.
Asked whether the formal Article 50 divorce process could be reversed, Mr Tusk
replied: I should be happiest if it typically is. <br />
His view highlights
assumptions that some think is partly driving Europes tough response to Mrs Will
certainly. Lord Hill, Britains former EU commissioner, said the idea of Britain
would ultimately seek to remain in the bloc remained a surprisingly widely held
view in Belgium's capital. The idea that someone wants to leave strikes them as
being tough comprehend, he said. <br />
In public, however, EU leaders have
preferred to sternly make clear difficult choice Britain faces following on from
the Brexit vote and perhaps they are giving little slack across the potential
for talks to ease the way. <br />
Asked about Mrs Mays debut, Jean-Claude Juncker,
the European Commission president, theatrically scoffed at a reporter. Franois
Hollande, the French president, promised to give Mrs May a tough negotiation if
she pursued hard Brexit, while German chancellor Angela Merkel predicted rough
going. <br />
Mark Rutte, the Dutch prime minister and the closest EU ally of Mrs
Mays predecessor David Cameron, summed up the emotional. We fought four wars
against each other but since the 19th century equipment has gone relatively
smoothly, he said. Ive been very blunt with her and said: you must be trigger
this famous Article 50. Tremendous no negotiation before this. <br />
That all
entered spite of Mrs May setting a conciliatory tone in their summit remarks,
and impressing some leaders with the quality of her interventions on migration
and Russia policy. Dalia Grybauskaite, Lithuanias president, praised her
security interventions and Viktor Orban, Hungarys prime minister, said Mrs May
performed excellently, adding: Shes very clear-cut and accurate. <br />
Mrs May
stressed Britains determination will probably be dependable partner in and out
on the union, emphasising she'd play a full role in the bloc as a member and not
try to undermine the club from within. <br />
A later lunch with Mr Juncker on
Friday was an opportunity talk about Britains Brexit plans and negotiating
points. Downing Street said she stressed that she needed a bespoke arrangement
that would maintain positive economic ties while governing the numbers of
Europeans coming to Great britain. The two agreed to conduct talks within a
positive and constructive spirit. <br />
To ensure an even transition out from the
EU, Mrs May told the summit that Britain would begin to discuss its own trade
deals around the world, even before it leaves the union. <br />
That was
overshadowed, however, by the revolt of the Walloon regional government in
Belgium inside the EUs trade deal with Canada a veto that leaders saw as a bad
omen for Britains prospects of cutting a Brexit great deal. There are all these
problems to have a simple trade agreement with Canada, said Joseph Muscat, the
Maltese premier. Imagine an agreement although UK. <br />
For now though British
reporters were more preoccupied with language regime for Brexit talks, following
reports that Michel Barnier, the Frenchman acting as the commissions chief
negotiator, may conduct complex in French. <br />
Mrs May said she would speak in
English, Mr Barnier denied he previously decided and Ms Merkel gave a shrug. All
persons speak their own language, she described. Mr Barnier is a French citizen
and speaks French, just I speak French. expectations that Britain’s economy is likely to suffer from a hardline
stance by the EU in negotiations on the country’s EU exit.<br />

British prime minister Theresa May, who is in Brussels to attend her first EU
summit since Britains vote to leave the bloc in June, experimented with reassure
EU leaders over Brexit but was relayed through French president Franois Hollande
to prepare for tough talks. <br />
Sterling had been trading just above $1.22 for
back links the European trading session, but fell to as low as $1.2171 after US
traders arrived at their desks. By mid-afternoon it was trading at $1.2198, down
half a percent on day time. <br />
Obviously the dollars been on the feet today and
sterling has brought another dip since united states came in, said a dealer with
one large international bank in London, yesteryear. <br />
Looking at the price
action, there come with been some orders look through on sterling yen.
<br />
"$1.22 the level close to the day as the flash crash, so presently there the
feeling that somewhere in the mid $1.22s was a pivot level for the pound and we
have broken that. I would personally stress today this is occurring in pretty
thin volumes of prints. <br />
The pound has fallen nearly 18% since the June vote
with losses accelerating in October after Ms May raised the spectre of a hard
Brexit, where the government will negotiate for an exit that favours tighter
immigration controls over free trade, likely curbing foreign investment needed
to fund Britains huge current account debts. <br />
Investors now price previously
impact within a hard Brexit on the economy as well as the current account driven
via the political stalemate between the uk and in conversation with of Europe,
said Nick Kounis, head of macro research at ABN-Amro. <br />
Sterlings slide has
sent inflation expectations soaring, driving investors to reassess chances of
further easing by the financial institution of England this seasons. <br />
It also
led some analysts state he that foreign investors were demanding any more
premium just before choosing gilts. <br />
Britains 10-year gilt yield was little
changed noisy . trading about 1.09%, holding below roughly the four-month highs
it hit on monday at 1.22%. <br />
Against the euro, the pound was flat at 89.185p.
You'll do it . currency was indeed hurt on Thursday by European Central Bank
chief Mario Draghis comments, because quashed speculation that the ECB was
considering the right way to wind down bond acquiring. <br />
Britains public
finances showed a much wider than expected deficit in September, a setback for
chancellor Philip Hammond while he prepares to result in the countrys first
budget plans within the Brexit vote. <br />
Yesterdays figures may limit Mr
Hammonds ability to cushion the blow of the referendum result via higher
spending or tax portions. <br />
Britain ran a budget shortfall of 10.6bn last
month, 15.5% higher than the deficit in factor month last year, the countrys
office for national statistics left a comment. <br />
The deficit, excluding
state-owned banks, was above all forecasts in a Reuters poll of economists,
which had produced a median projection associated with the 8.5bn deficiency.
<br />
Despite falling from about 10% of economic output in 2010 to 4% in getting
financial year, Britains deficit remains on the list of highest regarding any

BRUSSELS (AP) Prime Minister Theresa May signaled Friday that Britain is paving
the way for trade talks with other countries well before it leaves the European
Union but sought to reassure partners that this would not undermine the bloc's
trade aims. <br />
Facing EU leaders for the occasion since she began to power on
your back of the June U.K. vote to go away from the bloc, May said she wants a
smooth and cooperative relationship along with her partners as the country heads
out the exit door, probably in 2019. <br />
Her conciliatory tone was in sharp
contrast to the sometimes bitter rhetoric sparked by Britain's departure the
primary time an EU member has ever left the bloc including threats of a "hard
exit" that would see the country stranded outside Europe's massive single market
if it seeks to restrict the entry of EU migrants. <br />
"I've been clear that the
Ough.K. is discussing our future trade relationship with third countries," May
told reporters in the end of a two-day summit in Brussels. "This won't undermine
the EU's trade agenda. It is not in competition with it." <br />
In an effort to
restore some sorely-missing goodwill, May said she wants "a mature, cooperative
relationship with our European partners." She called for "give and take" and
also a willingness to approach the thorny divorce proceedings "in a constructive
spirit." <br />
So far, her EU partners are standing firm. Several reaffirmed that
the EU's four cherished freedoms will movement of goods, capital, services
individuals are indivisible, and that the U.K. cannot purchase the choicest
morsels. <br />
Still, in separate talks with Jean-Claude Juncker, the head of the
EU's executive arm, May insisted "that marketing techniques . need to see
controls on tinier businesses of people who come to Britain from Europe also as
a positive outcome for those who wish to trade in goods and services," her
office said in an assertion. <br />
Friday's summit talks were overshadowed with
major negotiating logjam as the small, French-speaking region in Belgium refused
to endorse a new trade pact with Canada, leaving the entire 28-nation EU earth's
biggest trading bloc in limbo. <br />
May gave support into the negotiating
efforts, even though her country will soon be rendering. She said Britain will
be seeking to generate an entirely new trade relationship with Europe, not one
that resembles any other the EU has away from the bloc. <br />
"We're not looking
to copy a model that someone has," she said. <br />
But Belgium Prime Minister
Charles Michel warned how the Canada impasse is truly a good sign for Uk.
<br />
"Everybody - and I'm saying it as well - thinks in case the EU doesn't
achieve finalizing this economic treaty with Canada, this signifies the
discussions with the U.K. tend to be very complex," he suggested.
<br />
Ultimately, May acknowledged, Britain's EU partners would to be able to move
as well as plan their future as 27 alone, although she insisted that London will
assume all of the responsibilities and obligations of membership exit
negotiations conclude. Travellers to move probably be around two yearsrrr time
after anticipated launch within the talks globe first quarter of 2017. <br />
For
their EU as well as the U.K., May said, "it's about seizing the opportunities of
Brexit." <br />

John Boehner's former press secretary, Michael Steel, has joined the club of
Republicans denouncing Donald Trump. These days Magazine op-ed today, he wrote
that the GOP presidential nominee is "not a Republican." <br />
Trump should be
considered an one-time fluke, solution . Steel, a Georgetown Institute of
Politics fellow who served as Boehner's press secretary in the House and a
senior advisor to Jeb Bush's presidential campaign. <br />
"He's a third-party
populist candidate," Steel told ABC News' Jonathan Karl and Rick Klein today on
the "Powerhouse Politics" podcast. He said Trump "captured the nomination of the
Republican party as a result of five-car, six-car pileup in the establishment
lane. He essentially was able to hijack the spouse." <br />
Despite concerns
towards contrary, he added, "I think his influence in the future will be fairly
limited." <br />
When asked if he thought the race for the White House was over,
Steel responded, "Yes. Yeah," citing the diminishing chances of Trump's win in
traditionally Republican states like Utah, Georgia and Arizona. <br />
"It's hard
design an electoral college scenario that isn't laughable that results in his
victory," he was quoted saying. <br />
But Steel has hope for 2020. He said he
doubts there actually be another Republican candidate like the billionaire
showman, because "he will you are a very winnable election" and ruined his image
as the winner. <br />
"I think that, absent Trump, marketing techniques . have had
a very exciting and interesting primary that wouldve resulted in an applicant
who could easily beat Secretary Clinton," he said. <br />
Steel is also optimistic,
but cautious the House's down-ballot races this semester. <br />
"There will be
some [losses] obviously," Steel said, adding that a weakened majority is "not on
Ryan." He attributed prospective losses and a narrow majority for House
Republicans to a first rate year for the Democratic Party, that is "organized in
wherein we are no more." <br />
In his Time op-ed, Steel emphasized that Trump
isn't the end in the Republican party, and that it could rebuild itself in his
wake. <br />
For now, he looks forward using a "40-something generation of rising
Republican leaders," like Paul Ryan, whose vice-presidential campaign he served
in 2012. <br />
"That's something," Steel said, "the Democrats don't have." <br />
<br />
With these final days, Hillary Clinton is making a direct pitch to the undecided
voters who may be turned off by Donald trump. <br />
During a rally in Cleveland
today, the Democratic presidential nominee reached to be able to people she said
could be "reconsidering" her opponent. <br />
"I wanna say something to people who
become reconsidering their support for my opponent," she told the crowd. "I know
you may still have questions for me, I respect that, I need to answer them, I
wanna earn your vote." <br />
She added that she's "reaching out to all Americans:
Republicans, Democrats and Independents." <br />
"I think America needs every
single one of us to bring our energy, our talents, ambition to build that better
country," she said. <br />
These comments sound like part of a comprehensive
strategy by her campaign. <br />
Talking to reporters ahead of finally presidential
debate on Wednesday night, Clinton's communications director, Jennifer Palmieri,
explained that Clinton's focus at the debate and in those final weeks would be
to win over those voters who have been turned off by Trump in recent weeks.
<br />
They believe a large chunk of voters who changed their mind about voting for
Trump after leaked audio was released showing him speaking in a vulgar way about
women -- and the campaign hopes to tap in to this. <br />
This effort also comes as
the campaign continues to flourish their battleground state map to include
traditionally Red states like Arizona and Utah. <br />
Aides say they no longer
want to just want to win the race -- they want november 23 big. <br />
"I hope that
as we proceed through these next 18 days everyone thinks seriously about what we
really want to see, not just in your next president, but in your lives, in your
jobs, in your education, in our future together," Clinton said today, her first
rally while the last debate. "And the only approach we take to can have that
positive optimistic unifying future is everybody of you assist us get there."
<br />
During the rally, the Democratic nominee also went after Trump for his
accusation that the election is "rigged" gorgeous honeymoons as well refusing to
say he will accept the outcome of the election. <br />
"Make no mistake," Clinton
explained, "By doing that, hes threatening our democracy." <br />
"Look, an
individual lose an election, Ive lost elections, you dont feel very creative the
next day, do you? But we know in our country the difference between leadership
and dictatorship, right?" she added while crowd cheered. <br />
The state is the
one that the campaign up until recently felt unsure about. Now, however, they
feel their chances of winning are improving. <br />
"Right now, the wind is at our
back's in Ohio," Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon told reporters Friday.
<br />
Clinton herself continued having a line of attack this wounderful woman has
used often in the Rust Belt states of Ohio and Pennsylvania, although try
november 23 over white, working class voters. <br />
Going after Trump for
outsourcing gorgeous honeymoons as well having his businesses use steel from
overseas she said: "He has put Chinese steel workers to work, not American steel
workers, and we're likely to change where." ATCHISON,
Kan. — A chemical spill at a northeast Kansas distilling plant
released a noxious cloud of fumes Friday, forcing temporary evacuations
and sending dozens of people to the hospital, including two who were in
intensive care, officials said.<br />
Most of the people who went to hospitals had been released by Friday afternoon.<br />
The
spill occurred at the MGP Ingredients plant in Atchison, according to
Katie Horner, spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Emergency
Management. She said the spill occurred as two chemicals, sulfuric acid
and sodium hypochlorite, were mistakenly combined at the plant, which
produces premium distilled spirits and employs about 300 people.<br />
When the two chemicals combine they can release chlorine gas, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.<br />
Homes
and schools near the plant had been evacuated early Friday, but city
officials gave the all clear for residents to return before noon.
Atchison has about 11,000 residents and is about 50 miles northwest of
Kansas City.<br />
"The threat is really over, and it's safe to be
outside," said Becky Berger, assistant city manager. She advised
residents to air out homes that smell like a swimming pool.<br />
Sixty-seven
people sought medical attention at the Atchison Hospital emergency
room, spokeswoman T.C. Roberts said, and one person remained in stable
condition in intensive care late Friday afternoon. Most had been
released, but two other people were admitted to the hospital.<br />
Mosaic
Life Care in nearby St. Joseph, Missouri, also treated about 18 people,
including one who remained in ICU Friday afternoon, said Joey Austin,
hospital spokeswoman. All the others were released.<br />
The regional
EPA office said it was supporting state and local emergency crews and
had sent a coordinator to the site to assess the situation.<br />
MGP didn't immediately return calls seeking comment.<br />
Chris Gitro, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said wind conditions helped the plume break up.<br />
"The one thing we had on our side was that the winds were enough to make it disperse," he said.<br />
Pinpointing
the cloud's direction proved to be a guessing game while it was still
in Atchison. As one school building's students sought shelter in the
gymnasium, students in the other three buildings were shuttled in buses
first toward a Wal-Mart before being redirected to the local airport,
schools Superintendent Susan Myers said. The buses were eventually
directed again to Wal-Mart, she said.<br />
<br />
<aside id="related-content">
</aside>"They were trying to figure out the wind, where
this cloud was going. It was a very fluid situation," she said. "I
would say it was very anxiety-provoking to have this kind of situation.
I'm sure this was an adventuresome day for everyone."<br />
The MGP
plant has also had other incidents, including a small explosion in
another building in February where no injuries were reported, City
Manager Trey Cocking said. The plant was also the site of a 2002
explosion and fire that damaged the plant's distillery and injured a few
people.<br />
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said that
since 2006 the company has faced more than $50,000 in penalties for
issues including exceeding its air pollution cap and failing to install
emissions devices. The company is currently in full compliance,
according to the department.</div>
